Understand what MRT Jakarta currently connects

Use the MRT for central-to-south journeys along its operating line, not as a direct train to Kota Tua or every landmark in central Jakarta.

MRT Jakarta publishes a line map, departure information, station facilities and a web journey planner. Stations such as Bundaran HI, Dukuh Atas and Blok M are useful anchors for visitors, but the best exit depends on the street and onward mode. Read the station locality map before arriving underground.

The operator's official guide instructs passengers to tap in, queue behind the safety line and allow people to leave the train first. Payment options and ticket products can evolve, so verify the current method rather than arriving with an obsolete card recommendation. Ask station staff for the accessible route when lifts are required.

  • Save the official MRT line map.
  • Record the station exit with the destination.
  • Let passengers alight before boarding.
02

Use TransJakarta for the wider street network

TransJakarta reaches many corridors beyond the MRT, but road conditions, platform direction and interchange walking make live route information essential.

The bus system includes dedicated BRT infrastructure alongside other services. Enter through recognised stops, follow staff guidance and confirm that the platform serves the correct direction before tapping. Two stops with related names may sit on opposite sides of a major road or inside a complex interchange.

Buses can connect the Merdeka area, Old City approaches and districts not covered by the operating MRT line. Surface traffic still affects some services, particularly during rain or events. Keep a route alternative and avoid boarding an informal bus solely because its destination board appears familiar.

  • Check TransJakarta's current route tool.
  • Confirm direction before crossing the gate.
  • Keep bags in front in crowded vehicles.
03

Reach Kota Tua through an appropriate rail link

KAI Commuter's Jakarta Kota station is the established rail gateway for Kota Tua, with Museum Bank Indonesia and Fatahillah Square reached on foot afterward.

KAI Commuter publishes schedules, fares and a route map through its official channels. Identify the correct line, interchange and final station before entering the network. Commuter trains serve a large metropolitan region, so a platform mistake can carry a visitor far beyond the intended district.

From Jakarta Kota, use public crossings and follow local signs into the heritage area. Construction connected with future MRT expansion does not mean a current MRT ride already reaches Kota Tua. Verify any temporary access change and keep clear of work zones around the station.

  • Use KAI Commuter's own journey information.
  • Match platform and destination before boarding.
  • Allow time to orient outside Jakarta Kota station.
04

Make Dukuh Atas an intentional interchange

Use Dukuh Atas to connect modes only after mapping the pedestrian transfer, because nearby systems occupy different stations and levels.

The area brings MRT, commuter rail, airport rail and other services within a major transit district. Integration does not always mean a same-platform transfer. Signs, covered links, lifts and street crossings form part of the journey, especially with luggage or limited mobility.

Airport transport should be checked with its own operator rather than inferred from an urban MRT ticket. Build a generous buffer before a flight or intercity train and avoid peak commuter periods when carrying large bags. If a lift is unavailable, ask uniformed personnel for the official alternative.

  • Map the walking link between named stations.
  • Treat airport rail as a separate operator.
  • Use staffed assistance for step-free rerouting.
05

Handle weather, payment and personal space

Prepare a valid fare method, protect your phone from rain and follow local queue behaviour so a small disruption does not derail the journey.

A route stored only on a nearly empty phone becomes fragile during a storm. Carry a power bank, save the destination address offline and know one staffed station near the route. BMKG or Jakarta flood alerts should influence surface transfers and the walk from the stop.

Priority seating and accessible paths belong to passengers who need them. Keep doorways free, remove backpacks in dense vehicles and avoid loud calls. Jakarta's network becomes far easier when travellers use operator information, respect passenger flow and accept that the final kilometre may require the most attention.

  • Carry a charged power bank.
  • Give priority space to eligible passengers.
  • Move away from doors before checking directions.
